eBay Parts Compatibility CSV Upload: Fitment Data Explained
Fitment data is the single biggest factor in whether your auto parts listing gets found — and whether the buyer returns it. I've seen sellers cut their return rate in half just by adding proper compatibility data. Here's how it works.
What Is Fitment Data on eBay?
Fitment data tells eBay which vehicles a part fits. When a buyer searches for "2020 Honda Civic brake pads," eBay checks the compatibility data on every listing to decide which ones to show. No fitment data? Your listing is invisible to those searches.
eBay calls this "Parts Compatibility" and it lives in a special field in your listing. It's separate from your title and item specifics — it's structured data that eBay's search engine can actually parse and match against vehicle lookups.
The Compatibility Format
When uploading via CSV (File Exchange), compatibility data goes in a column called Relationship or is handled through eBay's compatibility template. The format uses pipe-separated values:
Year|Make|Model|Trim|Engine 2018|Honda|Civic|EX|2.0L L4 2018|Honda|Civic|LX|2.0L L4 2019|Honda|Civic|EX|2.0L L4 2019|Honda|Civic|LX|2.0L L4 2019|Honda|Civic|Sport|2.0L L4 2020|Honda|Civic|EX|2.0L L4 2020|Honda|Civic|LX|2.0L L4
Each line is one vehicle application. A brake pad set might fit 30-50 different year/make/model/trim combinations. Yes, it's a lot of data. Yes, it's worth it.
Where to Get Fitment Data
This is the hard part. Your supplier PDF might list fitment as a text block ("Fits 2018-2022 Honda Civic, 2019-2023 Toyota Corolla") or it might not list fitment at all. Here's where to find it:
1. Supplier catalogs
Some suppliers include application data in their catalogs. Dorman and Moog are pretty good about this. The data might be in a separate "application guide" PDF or spreadsheet. Ask your supplier rep — they often have digital application files they don't advertise.
2. Manufacturer websites
Most aftermarket manufacturers have part lookup tools on their websites. Search by part number and they'll show you every vehicle it fits. It's manual work, but the data is accurate.
3. Cross-reference databases
Services like ShowMeTheParts, myPartFinder, and WHI Solutions maintain cross-reference databases. Some are free for basic lookups, others require a subscription. If you're listing thousands of parts, a subscription pays for itself quickly.
4. OEM interchange
If you know the OEM part number your aftermarket part replaces, you can look up which vehicles used that OEM part. Our OEM part numbers guide covers this in detail.
Uploading Compatibility via CSV
There are two ways to include fitment in your bulk upload:
Method 1: Inline in File Exchange
Add a Product:UPC or use eBay's catalog matching. If eBay recognizes your part (via Brand + MPN), it may auto-populate compatibility from its own database. This works for popular parts but misses niche applications.
Method 2: Separate compatibility file
Upload a second CSV specifically for compatibility data. This file links to your listings by SKU and contains the year/make/model data. This gives you full control but requires maintaining two files.
Action,ItemID,Relationship,RelationshipDetails Add,YOUR_ITEM_ID,Compatible,"Year=2020|Make=Honda|Model=Civic|Trim=EX|Engine=2.0L L4" Add,YOUR_ITEM_ID,Compatible,"Year=2021|Make=Honda|Model=Civic|Trim=EX|Engine=2.0L L4"
Common Fitment Mistakes
1. Overly broad fitment
Listing a part as fitting "2010-2022 Honda Civic" when it only fits the 2016-2022 models is a guaranteed return. Buyers trust your fitment data. If it's wrong, they'll buy the part, discover it doesn't fit, and you'll eat the return shipping cost plus a negative review.
2. Missing trim/engine variations
A 2020 Honda Civic comes in LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, and Touring trims with different engines. Some parts fit all trims, others don't. If you're not sure, leave the trim field empty (eBay treats it as "all trims") — but only if you're confident the part is universal for that year/make/model.
3. Not updating fitment when manufacturers revise
Aftermarket manufacturers occasionally update their application data — adding new vehicles or removing incorrect ones. If you listed a part two years ago, the fitment data might be outdated. Check your top-selling parts quarterly.
How Fitment Affects Your Bottom Line
| Metric | Without Fitment | With Fitment |
|---|---|---|
| Search visibility | Title matches only | Title + vehicle filter matches |
| Click-through rate | Lower (buyer unsure) | Higher (confirmed fit) |
| Return rate | 8-12% | 3-5% |
| Buyer messages | Frequent "does this fit?" | Rare |
| eBay search ranking | Lower | Higher (eBay rewards complete data) |
Key Takeaways
- Fitment data directly controls whether your listing appears in vehicle-specific searches
- The format is pipe-separated: Year|Make|Model|Trim|Engine
- Get fitment data from supplier catalogs, manufacturer websites, or cross-reference databases
- Inaccurate fitment causes returns — when in doubt, be conservative
- Listings with proper compatibility data see lower return rates and higher search visibility
